NASCAR Bank of America Roval 400 takeaways: Shane van Gisbergen plays playoff spoiler as drama unfolds behind him

Despite increased tire fall off that challenged drivers all day at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, Shane van Gisbergen prevailed for his fifth straight win on a road/street course. The drama, though, came as Ross Chastain — needing one point to advance to the Round of 8 — attempted a hail mary move on Denny Hamlin, causing both to spin and paving the way for Joey Logano to move on by four points.

Here are three takeaways from the Round of 12 cutoff race in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs:

Shane van Gisbergen's road course dominance continues

After getting eliminated from playoff contention following the Round of 16, van Gisbergen returned to form, winning his fifth consecutive race on a road/street course. He is now one win from tying Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon (six) for the most road course wins in a row and becomes the first driver since Hall of Famer Bobby Allison in 1982 to win multiple races in a season by at least 15 seconds (Mexico City), per NASCAR Insights.

Although Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell kept van Gisbergen honest through much of the race, he drove away to a commanding 15.1-second win over Larson after leading a race-best 57 of the 109 laps. It is the New Zealander's first win at the Charlotte Roval.

It was not the dominance from start to finish that we have seen from van Gisbergen throughout the season, but the fact that he still won by such a large margin while those behind him pitted for fresher tires speaks to how difficult it is to take him down on road courses.

Pit road mistakes prove costly for Ross Chastain

As dramatic as the finish to the race turned out to be, as Chastain tried everything he could to advance to the Round of 8, a pair of miscues on pit road put him in the precarious position he was in.

He overshot the pit exit on Lap 27 and was too fast exiting on pit road during a green-flag stop with 23 laps to go. As he tried to overcome the lost track position, Logano's crew chief, Paul Wolfe, brought him down pit road for one final stop with 11 laps remaining, giving his driver four fresh tires to get all the spots he needed in the closing laps.

Although Chastain gave it everything he had, he could not overcome the earlier mistakes, missing playoff advancement by four points to Logano. 23XI Racing teammates Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace joined Chastain below the cutline, as did Team Penske's Austin Cindric, as all four drivers saw their playoff runs come to an end.

Austin Cindric's playoff fate sealed after miserable run

Cindric knew he would have an uphill battle to advance to the Round of 8, coming into the day 48 points below the cutline. A lack of speed in the opening stage, combined with a stop-and-go penalty for missing the backstretch chicane and a pair of spins, made for a miserable day for Cindric.

In the end, Cindric finished 36th and saw his playoff run come to a halt. The odds were stacked against him coming into the race, but Cindric was never in contention or able to give himself a shot.

All you can really ask for in Cindric's position is to just be in position as the laps wind down. It was clear in the early going on Sunday that it would not be the case for Cindric, who bowed out of the playoffs in the Round of 12.
