Giants rookies show leadership by accepting blame after loss to Saints

Jaxson Dart very much looked like a rookie quarterback as he committed three costly turnovers in the New York Giants' 26-14 loss to what had been a winless New Orleans Saints (1-4) side on Sunday.

Shortly after the Giants fell to 1-4 on the season, Dart revealed what he told his teammates about his performance in New Orleans.

Jaxson Dart falls on sword after loss to Saints

"I told as many guys as I can in the locker room, this one is on me, and I'm going to get better," Dart explained, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN. "I expect myself to play better in these games and to win them."

Dart helped the Giants jump out to a 14-3 lead early in the second quarter before the Big Blue offense became one big liability. As Giants broadcaster Lance Medow pointed out, New York was responsible for six turnovers (one on downs) and two punts after the club completed touchdown drives on its first two possessions. One of those miscues involved Dart simply dropping the ball while looking to make a play early in the third quarter. He also tossed two interceptions.

"I mean, I'm the leader of the offense," Dart said about why he took blame for the loss. "Anytime those things happen, it kind of falls back on the leaders. I take that responsibility."

Cam Skattebo vows to "be better" after mistake

Dart wasn't the only offensive player who let the Giants down on Sunday. On the first play of the fourth quarter, rookie running back and fan-favorite Cam Skattebo had the ball knocked out of his arm in the red zone. Saints safety Jordan Howden ultimately recovered the loose ball and then returned it 86 yards for a touchdown that ensured the Giants wouldn't accumulate needed momentum.

Following the loss, Skattebo took to X to address that turnover.

At one point in Sunday's contest, the Giants turned over the ball on five straight possessions. Dart acknowledged such errors are unacceptable.

"It's not good," Dart said. "Got to cut that s--- out. I think that starts with me being a leader. Some of those came from me. I have to be a better example. I have to be a better leader. In those situations, just talk to the guys in the huddle. Just remind them about ball security. As a quarterback, I put that on myself."

Dart and Co. won't have much time to get over Sunday's result, as the Giants host the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles (4-1) this coming Thursday night. As of Monday morning, ESPN BET had the Giants as 7.5-point underdogs for that matchup.
