Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence makes big admission about game-winning play vs. Chiefs

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was a key figure regarding a pair of highlight-reel plays during the club's final offensive drive of Monday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

After Lawrence turned a near disaster into a rushing touchdown that propelled Jacksonville to a 31-28 victory, he shared a big admission about a moment that nearly didn't occur.

Trevor Lawrence "panicked" before game-winning score

"I mean, I just panicked, honestly," Lawrence explained, per Michael DiRocco of ESPN. "I was trying to get up to get the ball out of my hands. We didn't have any timeouts left, so I was really going to just stand up and launch it out the back of the end zone."

The Jaguars were trailing by four points and had no timeouts when Lawrence snapped the ball at the Kansas City one-yard line with 30 seconds remaining in regulation. Jaguars right guard Patrick Mekari then stepped on Lawrence's foot, causing the signal-caller to fall to the ground. Lawrence stumbled, eventually got to his feet and then heroically shook off a tackle before he dove into the end zone to the delight of the EverBank Stadium crowd.

"Throw it away," first-year Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said about what went through his mind once Lawrence tripped, per Grant Gordon of the NFL's website. "...When he got stepped on and he's coming out of it, and you're like, 'Oh, my gosh, throw it away,' so we could have another down. Man, what an individual effort. I mean, obviously, tough moment -- where I can only imagine, where he was at in that moment. But to get up, break three tackles or whatever it was, two tackles, and shed some dude off and go running in. That's an unbelievable individual effort."

Shortly before Lawrence created his stumble-and-score moment that helped the Jaguars improve to 4-1 on the season, he connected with wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. for a 33-yard completion on third down to extend the Jacksonville drive with under a minute to play.

In total, Lawrence completed 18-of-25 pass attempts for 221 yards with a touchdown and an interception in front of a prime-time television audience. He also rushed for a team-high 54 yards and two scores on the ground.

Trevor Lawrence "wasn't going to lose" against Chiefs

"Yeah, that's a goofy finish, but what a tough moment for him to be able to say like, 'He wasn't going to lose' and that's kind of really what it comes down to," Coen added about Lawrence after the victory. "He wasn't going to lose, and he made an unbelievable individual effort that hopefully can continue to springboard us."

The Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts (4-1) are now tied atop the AFC South standings heading into Week 6. Jacksonville next hosts the Seattle Seahawks (3-2) this coming Sunday. As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had the Jaguars as 1.5-point favorites for that matchup.

"I mean, we feel like we are," Lawrence said when asked if beating the reigning AFC champions proved the Jaguars are true contenders this fall. "...We have to take it week by week. Obviously, we think we're a good team, so we believe that."
