Giants' Cam Skattebo addresses viral moment after fumble in loss to Saints

New York Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo committed a costly fumble that resulted in a New Orleans Saints touchdown this past Sunday and then went viral when he screamed that he needed "new gloves" on the sideline.

During a chat with Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Skattebo made it clear that his feelings about his "soaking wet" gloves were simply related to the mistake he made during what became a 26-14 loss that dropped the Giants to 1-4 on the season.

Why Cam Skattebo was frustrated after fumble vs. Saints

"The frustration was out of me fumbling, not out of anything else," Skattebo explained. "And it just came off that way. But the thing is, I needed new gloves and I was asking for new gloves, but I was frustrated while doing it. It wasn’t on anybody. I didn’t ask for them beforehand or anything. It was, you know, something that I needed, that I kinda should have spoke[n] up [about] before. But I just needed some new gloves."

On the first play of the fourth quarter of Sunday's game, Skattebo had the ball knocked out of his arm in the red zone. Saints safety Jordan Howden quickly recovered the loose ball and then took it 86 yards to the house for a score.

Skattebo wasn't the only Giants player who had a moment he'd like to forget in New Orleans. Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart committed three turnovers in the loss, and the Giants were responsible for six turnovers (one on downs) and two punts after they found the end zone on their first two possessions.

Cam Skattebo doesn't blame gloves for fumble

"I fumbled because I fumbled," Skattebo said. "He got a good punch on it. I gave the ball up, you know. That was on me 100 percent. But there was no blame on anything. It was my fault."

Skattebo and Co. will need to clean things up in a hurry, as the Giants host the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles (4-1) on Thursday night. As of Wednesday morning, ESPN BET had the Giants as 6.5-point home underdogs for that matchup.

"Sometimes on the sidelines people don’t hear things," Skattebo added. "So I was expressing myself to get me gloves, but it came across angry because of my mood at the time from fumbling."
