Long before the New York Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs via a 5-2 home loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series on Wednesday night, pockets of Yankees fans called on team owner Hal Steinbrenner to dismiss manager Aaron Boone.
While speaking with reporters after the Yankees' latest postseason disappointment, Boone indicated he has no reason to believe he'll be going anywhere this fall.
"I’m under contract, so I don’t expect anything," Boone said, per Greg Joyce of the New York Post.
Boone signed a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2027 season back in February of this year. Yankees captain Aaron Judge has repeatedly backed Boone amid constant criticisms from members of the fan base, and Boone has guided the club to seven playoff appearances in eight years.
Most notably, the 2024 Yankees completed a trip to the World Series before they fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. That said, the fact that the Bronx Bombers still haven't won a Fall Classic since 2009 doesn't sit well with fans who expect better from the storied franchise.
Before Wednesday's game got underway, MLB insider Jon Heyman of Bleacher Report shared that "Boone's job feels 'safe.'" Meanwhile, Yankees senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman is under contract through next season.
On Thursday morning, Bob Klapisch of NJ Advance Media directly said that "Boone isn’t getting fired this winter," in part "because Cashman remains fiercely loyal" to the skipper.
"I know for me personally, I know for a lot of those guys, it also continues to ignite your fire to want to get back and play in these meaningful games and have a chance at glory," Boone continued following Wednesday's result. Per Scott Polacek of Bleacher Report, Boone added that he is "confident we'll break through" as soon as next year.
"I have been every year," Boone explained about his mindset. "And I believe in so many of the people in that room. That hasn't changed. The fire hasn't changed. It's hard to win a World Series."
If the Yankees are to win the World Series roughly 12 months from now, it appears they'll have to do so with Boone and Cashman running the show.
