San Francisco 49ers (4-1) quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Mac Jones are both dealing with physical setbacks as the club prepares to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-1) on Sunday.
That said, it sounds like Jones, not Purdy, will be in the lineup for the 49ers' matchup in Tampa Bay.
During a Thursday appearance on San Francisco Bay Area sports radio station KNBR, 49ers general manager John Lynch revealed that he couldn't give "a completely accurate and direct" timeline for when Purdy may return to action.
"I can tell you, although he's not on the practice field, he's out here working," Lynch said about Purdy, per David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "He's doing a lot of things, trying to build up the strength and get that thing in a good spot. So I think he'll continue to do that, and when he's ready, he'll be ready."
Purdy missed Weeks 2 and 3 of the season because of a toe injury that he reaggravated in Week 4. A report from last week indicated that he would be unavailable for the Tampa Bay game.
Meanwhile, Jones initially aggravated a PCL injury back on Sept. 21 before he ended San Francisco's 26-23 Week 5 overtime victory at the Los Angeles Rams with an oblique issue. Jones has gone 3-0 as the 49ers' spot-starter and seems to be on track to get the nod for the Tampa Bay contest.
"I think we feel pretty good about where he's going to be at," Lynch said about Jones. "If you saw him play through [the Rams game], that was real-life stuff. You saw it, and you saw toughness and grit, and you saw a guy stepping up and playing through some things. But I think Mac's in good shape, who will continue to work to it by Sunday. We're hopeful and believe that he's going to be in a good spot."
#MacJones obvious worry is left knee PCL aggravation but video doesn't show that. Hopefully just a scare and the lower bar of the brace hurt his calf on fall. Fingers crossed. pic.twitter.com/x7CB1E1oU2

ESPN BET had the 49ers as 2.5-point underdogs against the Buccaneers. Assuming Jones starts, Purdy will spend the next nine days trying to get right for the 49ers' Week 7 contest against the Atlanta Falcons.
