Bucks' latest decision seems like a desperate ploy to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Milwaukee Bucks are adding Alex Antetokounmpo to their roster on a two-way contract, per ESPN's Shams Charania. He will join his brothers Giannis and Thanasis, making them the first trio of siblings to be active on the same NBA roster in history.

In order to sign the youngest Antetokounmpo brother, the Bucks are cutting Jamaree Bouyea, who, on paper, is far more qualified for his role. Bouyea split his time between the Wisconsin Herd and Austin Spurs last season, averaging 19.5 points, 4.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game while converting at a reliable 52.7% from the field. He has NBA-level upside and could have fought for minutes within Doc Rivers' rotation.

Alex, though, could struggle to prove himself. He played in 18 G League games during the 2023-24 season, averaging 5.7 points and 2.9 rebounds, while shooting a paltry 32% from the floor. Last year, while with PAOK mateco in Greece, he struggled even more, averaging 1.2 points and 1.1 rebounds per game over 14 appearances.

Milwaukee Bucks' latest move signals how desperate they are to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo

For most, waiving a more complete talent to make room for a developmental prospect would make little sense. Yet for the Bucks, it seems like a clear Hail Mary to keep their star player happy in his current situation.

Milwaukee could be accused of using nepotism to manipulate Giannis. We've all heard the rumors that he could jump ship if the Bucks don't start competing for championships.

By adding both of his brothers to the roster — with neither expected to earn playing time — Milwaukee is putting all its cards on the table. It will do whatever it deems necessary to keep him in a Bucks jersey, even if that means committing financial resources to all the wrong places.

Bouyea should have every right to feel aggrieved with how this has all played out. He's proven himself at the G League level and deserves a shot to fight for minutes as part of a two-way contract. Yet he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, and now the third Antetokounmpo will get the opportunity and the pay packet because of the name on the back of his jersey.

Make no mistake, this isn't Giannis' fault. The only thing he's guilty of is holding the front office accountable and wanting to win at a high level. You can't fault him for that. Unfortunately, that doesn't change the situation Milwaukee has put him in.

What if Giannis does leave? Does that mean both his brothers are cut loose? How will that impact their careers? So many questions would be raised, none of which Giannis would want the answer to.

The Bucks are desperate to keep Giannis. Their latest move proves that. And in the process, they've cheapened what it means to earn an NBA contract. Apparently, it's not what you can do, it's who you're related to, and when that becomes commonplace, the NBA will be in a dark spot.
