Social media was tantalizing on Tuesday, pitting Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables against his former conference, the Big 12.
Venables spoke to the steep competition in the Southeastern Conference, saying, "This isn't the old Big 12 days where Oklahoma destroys everybody every single week except one game of the year."
Now, one can only assume that the "one game of the year" reference is about Texas, the Sooners' longtime, storied rival.
The Big 12's official X account fired back shortly thereafter, writing, "Coach Venables lost eight Conference games in his two seasons in the Big 12." That's too good.

Both comments contain accurate statements. Venables is right in that for years, Oklahoma often was the top team in the Big 12. That being said, Venables in his two seasons as the Sooners' head coach, while the team resided in the Big 12, went 16-10 overall and just 10-8 in league play.
His first season in the loaded SEC was bad, as Oklahoma mustered a 6-7 overall mark and went a subpar 2–6 in conference competition. The Sooners are faring much better so far in the 2025 campaign, going 5-1 overall (1-1 in SEC play) while being ranked No. 14 in the Associated Press top-25 poll.
However, Oklahoma did get knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten last weekend, as the Sooners fell to Texas, 23-6, in the annual Red River Rivalry in Dallas. This Saturday, Oklahoma travels to South Carolina, and the Sooners remain in the conversation for a possible bid to the 12-team College Football Playoff.
One interesting nugget, though. Since the 2000 season, the Sooners played in the Big 12 for 24 years before heading to the SEC. In those campaigns, Oklahoma lost at least two Big 12 games in 13 seasons — or slightly more than half the time.
Whether Venables intentionally took a jab at the Big 12 or not, it's a bad look. He is deservingly getting roasted on social media following those comments on Tuesday.
Conference realignment chaos in recent years has resulted in these sorts of trolling social media posts. Last month, the Pac-12 Conference trolled struggling UCLA, which is now part of the Big Ten Conference.
When you leave for "greener" pastures and you play poorly or say something silly, you're going to get called out for it.
