We have more proof that Pope Leo XIV is at least keeping up with the American sports scene despite his duties as head of the Roman Catholic Church.
Video released Wednesday by The Vatican showed the Pope greeting crowds in Rome. At one point, one onlooker can be heard yelling “go Cubs!” as the Pope passes.
Leo did not miss the comment. The Chicago native and lifelong White Sox fan wasted no time in telling it like it is.
“They lost!” the Pope replied.

The White Sox X account certainly approved of the message, reposting the video with the caption “That’s our Pope.”
The Cubs did, in fact, lose in the National League Division Series to the Milwaukee Brewers. They were eliminated on Saturday night, so the Pope is keeping relatively current on his sporting events. Someone should try to get his thoughts on the Chicago Bears’ winning streak.
When Leo XIV was elected, initial reports indicated that he was a Cubs fan, but that was obviously not true. He has made that clear a few times over the past several months, and he did so again here.
