Packers issue troubling injury report update before game vs. Cardinals

Hardly more than 24 hours before their game in Arizona, the Green Bay Packers issued a troubling injury report update regarding cornerback Keisean Nixon, who is now listed as questionable with an illness. Nate Hobbs is already questionable due to knee issues, so the secondary could be stretched thin on Sunday. By EPA per play, the Cardinals are only a middle-of-the-pack offense and will possibly be without quarterback Kyler Murray for a second straight game, but missing Nixon would be a blow for the Packers as health concerns continue mounting less than halfway through the season.

Keisean Nixon's absence could cause a matchup problem for Packers

Notably, Josh Jacobs was already tagged as questionable with an illness (as well as a calf injury). Whether or not that has anything to do with Nixon’s illness is unclear, but the last thing the Packers need is any kind of bug spreading in the locker room.

Nixon has emerged this season as a standout at his position. His 70.6 PFF grade, ranked 32nd out of 171, might not capture just how good he has been. Among the best at pass breakups, Nixon has led what was supposed to be a weak spot, the Packers’ cornerback room, into a strength. And that despite Hobbs missing a game and being compromised all year following knee surgery in training camp.

Having Nixon available is also significant, even if Murray can’t go, with top Cardinals receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. clearing concussion protocol after being removed from last week’s game against the Colts.

Whether it’s Murray or backup Jacoby Brissett under center, Harrison is really the only receiver threat opposing secondaries have to worry about. Tight end Trey McBride (37 catches, 347 yards) is the team’s go-to target, but Harrison’s 22 catches and 338 yards lead the receiver room by a mile. Next up is Zay Jones with 10 receptions for 116.

As Green Bay’s CB1, Nixon will be assigned to Harrison if healthy. Seeing him on the sidelines would be a big plus for the 2-4 Cardinals as they look to end a four-game losing streak and save their season in a Week 7 home game. As of Saturday afternoon, the Packers remain 7.5-point road favorites.
