'This is a historic loss': Insider calls out Giants after shocking collapse

The New York Giants seemed to be on their way to back-to-back wins with a 19-0 lead over the Denver Broncos entering the fourth quarter on Sunday.

That did not turn out to be the case after a historic collapse over the final 15 minutes. The Broncos scored all 33 of their points in the fourth quarter and still won despite quarterback Jaxson Dart regaining the lead for the Giants with less than a minute to play, ruining any positive vibes New York had coming in.

During an appearance on Monday's edition of ESPN's "Get Up," senior NFL insider Adam Schefter did not hold back on the latest missed opportunity for the Giants.

Schefter blasts Giants after fourth-quarter collapse

"The Giants have a lot of talent. The Giants should be in the thick of the playoff race with the roster they've built, with the swag the quarterback has brought to the team," Schefter said. "And instead, they have another heartbreaking, crushing, deflating loss. This is a historic loss.

"... We should be celebrating this team with the swag and talent they have. ... If they can make one extra point or two, they win. One gets them to overtime, two gives them the win. Extra points, little things. Instead, we have a historic collapse that will always be remembered."

Instead of a second straight win and a more manageable 3-4 record, the Giants sit at 2-5 and cannot seem to get out of their own way even though the pieces are in place to have success. A pair of missed extra points from kicker Jude McAtamney certainly did not help, but this game was lost in more ways than just one.

Dart accounted for four total TDs in the game, but his lone interception in the fourth quarter gave the Broncos excellent field position and led to a TD to make it a one-score game less than a minute later.

A lot of the blame can easily go to the defense after giving up all 33 points in the fourth quarter, but the interception and a three-and-out on the next possession from the offense definitely made matters worse.

Even with the TD run from Dart that helped the Giants regain the lead, 32-30, with 37 seconds remaining, the defense allowed the Broncos offense to immediately drive down the field and walk it off with a 39-yard field goal from Will Lutz.

This was another example of the Giants failing to put a complete game together, which is something they must improve on if they are going to bounce back from the Week 7 disaster.

A rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles is on tap for Week 8 to kick off a challenging stretch of games for the Giants. If they want to take that next step, closing out games is going to be crucial to build some momentum and erase the sting from a historic fourth-quarter collapse.
