Does Giants' Brian Daboll regret call that led to costly Jaxson Dart mistake in loss to Broncos?

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator/play-caller Mike Kafka came under fire after they put rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart in a situation that resulted in Dart throwing an inexcusable interception with under five minutes to play in regulation of the club's 33-32 loss at the Denver Broncos this past Sunday.

While speaking with reporters on Monday, Daboll was asked about allowing Dart to drop back to pass on that third-down play when the Giants held a 10-point lead with 4:56 on the clock.

Brian Daboll defends controversial play call vs. Broncos

"I thought the play call that Mike called was a good play call," Daboll insisted, per the Giants' website. "I thought it was an aggressive call to make a good play against the right coverage, what we anticipated to get. Credit Denver, they made a play."

While Dart acknowledged that he made "an unacceptable mistake" in that moment, numerous fans and analysts have said that the 22-year-old shouldn't have found himself in a position to turn the ball over late in the fourth regular-season start of his young career. Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy suggested that Daboll and Kafka should've done better to inform Dart to "take care of the football" and remember that "punting is not a bad thing" before that drive.

Also on Monday, Daboll confirmed he's not making major changes to his staff ahead of the Giants' game at the Philadelphia Eagles (5-2) this coming Sunday.

Brian Daboll admits Giants are "hurting" after historic collapse

The Giants fell to 2-5 on the season via a historic collapse in Denver that likely ensured Big Blue won't be part of any wild-card playoff conversations come December. On Monday, Daboll admitted the vibes inside the team's facility were understandably low coming off a brutal defeat.

"There are certainly a lot of guys that are hurting right now," Daboll added. "Some physically. But they gave everything they had, and we came up short. That was a tough one, make no mistake about it, but you've got to get back on your horse and get ready to play a very talented team that we just played two weeks ago. Look at the things that we didn't do quite as well, and we'll get onto Philadelphia with the right mindset."

The Giants earned a 34-17 "Thursday Night Football" win over the Eagles at MetLife Stadium on Oct. 9. As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had New York as a 7.5-point underdog for the Week 8 matchup at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field.
