Jets LB may be the trade piece that saves the 49ers defense

The San Francisco 49ers are astonishingly atop the NFC West with a 5-2 record. Having been without starting quarterback Brock Purdy the majority of the season and losing elite defensive cornerstones Nick Bosa and Fred Warner to season-ending injuries, what the 49ers have accomplished through seven weeks cannot be understated.

However, as the weeks pass, the injuries continue to accumulate and the margin for error becomes increasingly narrow. This time, edge-rusher Bryce Huff is set to miss a few weeks after suffering a hamstring strain, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. While San Francisco will play Week 8 without the veteran, it might be time for the front office to fork over a few draft picks and replenish their depleted defense ahead of the Nov. 4 deadline.

Potential trade candidate for the San Francisco 49ers

One potential trade candidate that sticks out is New York Jets defensive lineman Jermaine Johnson II.

The most notable tie between the 49ers and Johnson is defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. Saleh was the Jets' head coach responsible for selecting Johnson with the 26th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and could convince San Francisco’s front office to take a chance on his former first-round pick.

Through four games, Johnson has been stellar against the run, boasting a 70.8 PFF Grade, which would rank second among the 49ers’ defensive line. While Johnson will not offer much as a pass-rusher, totaling 12 pressures and averaging a 10.9% pass rush win rate, his addition would only strengthen San Francisco’s defense.

If anything, Johnson’s presence would allow Huff to slide back into a pass-rushing specialist upon his return — his original role before Bosa’s injury.

Johnson also fits the criteria for the 49ers' potential targets due to his contract status. Shanahan has consistently told the media that the 49ers plan to be selective at the trade deadline, focusing on acquiring a player who remains under team control beyond 2025.

The Jets picked up Johnson’s fifth-year option during the offseason, meaning he will make just under $13.5 million in 2026, giving San Francisco financial security over rental trade options. His contract could also be a reason the winless Jets and their new regime are more willing to move off Johnson, especially if it nets meaningful compensation.

Although the 49ers are not desperate to make a trade, Johnson’s potential availability might be too enticing to turn down.
