North Carolina is set to make decision on potentially firing Bill Belichick

On Saturday, North Carolina lost its fourth game in a row in a 17-16 nailbiter to No. 16 Virginia in front of 50,500 fans at Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill.

Head coach Bill Belichick's Tar Heels had a chance to pull off the upset in overtime, but a failed two-point conversion dropped UNC to 2-5. Belichick and the Tar Heels have faced scrutiny this season for a poor start. However, Belichick has said he remains committed to turning things around at North Carolina. UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham released a statement on Oct. 8 claiming that Belichick has the "full support" of the school.

Since Cunningham's statement, North Carolina has lost 21-18 to California and then dropped Saturday's game to Virginia.

Will North Carolina part ways with Bill Belichick?

While the Tar Heels have appeared to play better than when they were blown out by Clemson and UCF, the team has not been able to win a game since it played back-to-back contests against non-Power 4 programs Richmond and Charlotte in September.

Per Pete Nakos of On3, North Carolina hasn't ruled out potentially firing Belichick, but the program is waiting to decide until after the season.

"The Tar Heels lost in overtime Saturday to Virginia, dropping Bill Belichick to 2-5 on the season. North Carolina is still winless against Power Four opponents, but sources continue to tell On3 that any decisions about Belichick’s future will not come until the end of the season."

UNC would be on the hook for approximately $20 million if it fired Belichick at the end of the regular season. Boosters might find it easier to swallow that sum of money if Belichick is unable to win games in November.

North Carolina has winnable games upcoming in its final five contests of the season. The Tar Heels will play 3-5 Syracuse on Friday night before playing a November schedule of Stanford (3-5), Wake Forest (5-2), Duke (4-3) and NC State (4-4). It would be hard to imagine North Carolina bringing back Belichick if he goes 2-10, especially considering some of the drama that happened earlier in the season.
