It’s starting to feel like the 2000s all over again. The Indianapolis Colts (7–1), currently the AFC’s top seed, and the New England Patriots (6–2), sitting right behind them at No. 2, are both surging toward the postseason.
The last time these two franchises met in the playoffs was the 2015 AFC Championship Game, when New England triumphed en route to another Super Bowl. Now, nearly a decade later, a new chapter could be written — one starring Daniel Jones and Drake Maye.
Daniel Jones has reignited his career in Indianapolis, leading an offense that’s been steamrolling opponents. The Colts are averaging just over 33 points per game — the best mark in the NFL entering this week. With a balanced attack and renewed confidence, Jones has become the engine of a team that looks built for a deep playoff run.

On the other side, rookie quarterback Drake Maye has brought life back to Foxborough. The Patriots’ offense ranks eighth, posting nearly 26 points per game. Maye’s poise, accuracy, and athleticism have made him a fan favorite and a legitimate cornerstone for the franchise’s future.
The fact that Drake Maye's stat line looks like this on a day where Myles Garrett had 5 sacks is just so impressive.

Both teams also boast top-tier defenses — New England ranks fifth in the league, while Indianapolis comes in eighth. The balance between explosive offense and stout defense evokes memories of those classic Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady showdowns. Jones isn’t Manning, and Maye isn’t Brady, but the parallels in style and stakes are undeniable.
The Patriots’ schedule favors them slightly, with two matchups against the struggling New York Jets and two against the inconsistent Miami Dolphins. The Colts face a tougher road, including a pivotal trip to Kansas City to battle Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. If Indianapolis can emerge victorious there, they might just cement themselves as the AFC favorites.

A potential Colts–Patriots playoff meeting would be more than nostalgia — it would be a proving ground for both quarterbacks. For Maye and Jones, it’s an opportunity to carve their own legacies in one of football’s most storied rivalries.
It might not be Manning vs. Brady, but it sure feels like the 2000s again.
