76ers' young backcourt having historic start to season

The Philadelphia 76ers started this season without Paul George and with Joel Embiid limited by a sore knee. Thanks to their pair of young guards, they're 3-0.

Tyrese Maxey, 24, scored 43 points and 20-year-old rookie VJ Edgecombe scored 26 as the Sixers defeated the Orlando Magic Monday night, 136-124. The duo has driven the 76ers to an undefeated start even without the team's two highest-paid players.

Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe could be the 76ers' future

Philadelphia's disastrous 24-58 season, where the Sixers had championship aspirations, had a silver lining when the team ended up with the No. 3 pick in June's draft. This gave them the chance to select Edgecombe, the Big 12 Freshman of the Year from Baylor.

He's averaging 25 ppg so far, along with 5.7 rebounds and six assists. It's not just offense, either. Edgecombe has five steals and two blocks in his first three games.

Maxey is scoring even more than his backcourt partner. He's averaging 37 ppg and 7.7 assists. That kind of offensive production from a pair of guards is unprecedented — at least since the NBA started keeping track in 1970.

Not only are the Sixers guards lighting it up as a duo, but Maxey has the second-highest point total for three games in team history, behind Wilt Chamberlain. Rule of thumb for NBA stats: If the only comparable player is Wilt Chamberlain, a player is doing very, very well.

The 76ers might rethink their whole offense

With such exciting guards in the backcourt — and Kelly Oubre chipping in with 18 ppg — the 76ers might rethink their approach even when their injured stars come back. Can George and Embiid adjust to the fast-paced new-look Sixers?

It might be a boon to the older Sixers. If Embiid is still dealing with a bad knee, perhaps he can remake himself, specializing in playing defense and grabbing rebounds. With the speed and aggressiveness of Maxey and Edgecombe, Embiid could focus on throwing rebounds ahead to his streaking guards. He might not even have to jog past halfcourt.

For George, a versatile player and excellent spot-up shooter, he could also benefit from the young guards grabbing the attention of the defense. It's very possible these young teammates could keep their over-30 peers healthy for a playoff push.

The playoffs seem far more likely thanks to this hot start and a newly dangerous Philadelphia offense. Embiid and George are both on their way back, but considering how the season has started, the Sixers are in no hurry to get them back.
