The Dallas Cowboys were one of the most active NFL teams ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. Adding former New York Jets All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the mix should work wonders for their ailing run defense, and trading for Logan Wilson from the Cincinnati Bengals was an overlooked but solid pickup.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is proving that he's all in, and his deadline moves should benefit both the team's present and future. However, if Dallas wants to salvage its season, it needs to make a run at free-agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr.
Samuel, who had been dealing with a shoulder ailment and was limited to just four games last season, has finally been cleared to play, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Samuel is a ball-hawk with six interceptions and 176 tackles in his 50 appearances (47 starts) since being drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021, per Football Reference.
The Cowboys have surrendered the third-most passing yards (254.4), second-most total yards (414.8) and second-most points per game (30.3). Additionally, with Trevon Diggs still injured and Kaiir Elam not performing well in his place, Samuel could be the ideal partner alongside DaRon Bland.
Furthermore, Dallas should have injured rookie CB Shavon Revel Jr. on the field at some point during the season. After fixing their issues against the run by strengthening the trenches, adding a talented playmaker like Samuel could elevate the Cowboys to the next level.
