Twelve-year-old New York Jets fan Winston Sullivan had just watched his team lose 13-6 to the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 19 when he was asked to participate in a postgame interview while leaving MetLife Stadium.
"I hate this team," Sullivan said as he looked completely broken by what he had just witnessed. "I was born into this, and I’m not going to ever — I’m always a Jets fan. But, like, I just, I hate this team."
"I just said what I felt," Sullivan recently told Andy Vasquez of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com about a clip that went viral among Jets fans and other members of the sports community. "Bad plays. Bad offense. Disappointed by the coach, as well … I was quite embarrassed with my team. Didn’t believe my team was even going to get a win. I mean, we lost to the Carolina Panthers."
The Jets had fallen to 0-7 under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn. In Week 8, Gang Green notched a come-from-behind victory against the Cincinnati Bengals for their first win of the season.
As long as Sullivan has been alive, the Jets have experienced the longest ongoing postseason drought across the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS (tied with the Buffalo Sabres at 14 seasons). Therefore, Jets fans who saw and heard the clip understand exactly how he felt in that moment.
"I don’t know," Winston said about temporarily becoming the face of an entire fan base. "It was just so weird. Then, when I got on ESPN, I was like, 'Holy crap, this is a thing.' And yeah, I was just surprised, but I was happy."
Winston rocked a Quinnen Williams jersey to MetLife Stadium on that Sunday afternoon. On Tuesday, the Jets traded Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2026 second-round draft pick, a 2027 first-rounder and defensive tackle Mazi Smith.
Glenn insisted he and general manager Darren Mougey are building a team "that the fans will be proud of." Winston would rather have that happen than go viral by continuing to support a losing franchise.
"I told some of my friends this," Winston added while speaking with Vasquez. "I’d rather the Jets have won that game than me ever getting interviewed."
The 1-7 Jets will next have a chance to win when they host the Cleveland Browns (2-6) this Sunday.
