Perfect trade target could emerge for Edmonton Oilers to land a star goalie

As much as everyone wants to deny it, the clock is ticking on the Edmonton Oilers' (6-5-4) window to win a Stanley Cup with Connor McDavid.

The captain just signed a two-year, $25 million extension to stay with the Oilers, but if anything, that just signals how much runway the organization has to finish the job and win a championship with McDavid at the helm.

If they want to keep the best player in the world in Edmonton beyond that timeline, winning is a must, and given the current state of the roster, improvements need to be made if they hope to return to the Stanley Cup Final and get over that last hump.

Goaltending is always a major talking point and often the Oilers' biggest weakness. That being said, management has done little to address it in recent years, though there could be a situation brewing in Nashville that could provide them with the perfect opportunity to pounce, and that would involve star goaltender Juuse Saros.

The Predators (5-7-4) appear headed for another season at the bottom of the standings, and insider Jeff Marek recently speculated whether that could lead to Saros becoming available, much to the interest of the Oilers.

“I know the contract is lengthy, and it’s not small, but if you’re not talking about looking at Juuse Saros, then what are we doing here… If I’m the Edmonton Oilers, the place that I’m looking at here, whether it’s this year or next year with all the cap savings and the cap space, that’s where I’d be looking if I’m the Edmonton Oilers,” Marek said.

Saros just began the first season of the eight-year, $61.92 million contract extension he signed with the Preds in 2024.

Juuse Saros would jolt the Edmonton Oilers into a premier Cup contender

While you can never count out a group led by McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the Oilers don’t look the part of the team that’s been to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals.

Getting through a loaded Western Conference that includes the likes of Vegas, Dallas, Colorado and Winnipeg for a third straight year feels like a tall task, that is, without an impactful outside addition.

Saros’ numbers have not been up to his standard the last few years, but a lot of that can be attributed to the poor play in front of him in Nashville, and at 30 years old, he still has plenty of elite hockey ahead of him.

Even his struggles would be an upgrade over the tandem of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, while his upside is the ability to be one of the five best netminders in the league.

As Marek referred to in the clip, the Oilers can’t worry about the contract or the package of draft picks and prospects it would take to bring him to Edmonton; all that matters is chasing a ring in the here and now, which acquiring Saros would greatly benefit.
