Soon after the New York Giants parted ways with head coach Brian Daboll on Monday, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott was asked if he would consider reaching out to him.
The implied suggestion was that McDermott might consider replacing offensive coordinator Joe Brady with Daboll, following Buffalo's 30-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Daboll previously served as the offensive coordinator for Buffalo quarterback and reigning Most Valuable Player Josh Allen from 2018 through the 2021 season.
"Yeah, no, I understand why you're asking that," McDermott responded, per Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN. "Brian's a great coach. Unfortunate to see that happen to him. At this point, that's not under any type of consideration."
First, it's unclear whether Daboll is interested in returning to work so soon after being let go by the Giants. For a piece published Tuesday, ESPN's Ben Solak mentioned that Daboll could be a strong offensive coordinator candidate in the offseason.
Meanwhile, ESPN stats show that the Bills finished Week 10 as the NFL leader with 153.2 rushing yards per game. Buffalo is second with an average of 384.4 total yards per contest and sixth with an average of 27.6 points scored per game.
That said, Miami held Buffalo's offense scoreless for over three quarters in Week 10. According to Pro Football Reference, Allen was ranked 14th among qualified players with an average of 237.7 passing yards per game and 15th with a 61.6 adjusted QBR.
"Joe's a good coach," McDermott added about Brady. "He really is. We've got a really good offensive staff. They've had really good games. You're going to have some games you want back, some play calls you want back. It's how you respond to them, and I'm fully confident in our offensive staff, and Joe as our leader, that we will make the adjustments we need to make and move us forward."
The Athletic's Tim Graham noted that Daboll could serve as "a fantastic senior adviser on McDermott’s staff" if McDermott is serious about keeping Brady through the end of this season. For now, there's no indication Brady’s job is in jeopardy as he prepares for Buffalo's home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-3) this Sunday.
As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had the Bills as 5.5-point favorites for that matchup.
