The Jacksonville Jaguars seemed to be headed toward improving to 6-3 on the season when they entered the fourth quarter of this past Sunday's game at the Houston Texans, holding a 29-10 lead.
However, the Jaguars ultimately squandered that 19-point advantage en route to suffering a 36-29 loss to a Houston side that was without injured starting quarterback C.J. Stroud (concussion). While speaking with reporters on Monday, first-year Jacksonville head coach Liam Coen sent a warning to his players regarding what can't happen coming off such a disappointing defeat.
"We can’t relive the moment," Coen explained, per John Oehser of the Jaguars' website. "We can't change anything about the outcome of [Sunday]. It sucks, it's brutal. But this is the NFL. The real adversity, the real response to gut-wrenching, tough losses like this. Everything is in front of us. We have every opportunity to go win this week. That's all that matters. We've got to win this week."
As Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper referenced, the New York Giants improved to 2-4 on the season when they earned a win over the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6. In their next game, the Giants surrendered 33 fourth-quarter points to blow a 19-point lead in what became a 33-32 defeat at the Denver Broncos. Big Blue then dropped three more games before the club fired head coach Brian Daboll on Monday.
"When the players get back in the building [after a day off Tuesday], we are preparing for another opponent," Coen continued. "We have to get this tape fixed and corrected and moved on, but I'm not worried about losing the team by any means."
The 5-4 Jaguars next host the Los Angeles Chargers (7-3) this coming Sunday afternoon. As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had Jacksonville as a 2.5-point home underdog for that contest.
"I didn't feel like we had enough edge [Sunday]," Coen added about what went wrong at Houston's NRG Stadium. "I think we've shown to have the edge at times. You're on the right side of some of those games going into [Sunday], and then you have a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter. We didn't have our edge in the fourth quarter [Sunday], and that's what's very disappointing about that game. But the beauty of this league is we have an opportunity [this Sunday] to regain that edge into, 'Hey, if we're in that moment again, let's see how we respond.'''
How the Jaguars respond could determine if they remain part of postseason conversations through at least the end of December.
