Even before the New York Giants parted ways with head coach Brian Daboll on Monday, some wondered if North Carolina Tar Heels coach Bill Belichick would be interested in ending his coaching career with his former NFL employer.
At least one insider believes the legendary coach would welcome the opportunity to return to the organization.
"He'd walk from Chapel Hill to East Rutherford for this job," longtime Giants reporter and author Gary Myers recently said about Belichick possibly wanting to serve as the club's next head coach, per Armando Salguero of OutKick.
Myers added that he believes Belichick "desperately wants the 15 victories" needed to break Don Shula's NFL record for career wins by a head coach (including regular season and postseason). Myers also thinks Belichick "desperately wants" to win a Super Bowl without quarterback Tom Brady, after they famously led the New England Patriots to six championships during the first two decades of the 2000s.
Since at least the fall of 2023, many stories have connected Belichick with the Giants. He earned his first two career Super Bowl rings as an assistant and defensive coordinator with Big Blue from 1979 through 1990. According to reports, he would owe North Carolina a $1 million buyout if he left the school to return to the NFL, per his contract terms.
On Monday, Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch announced that general manager Joe Schoen "will lead the search for a new head coach." A later report indicated that Giants ownership still holds Schoen in "high regard."
It's unclear whether Schoen is interested in reaching out to Belichick, as the 73-year-old's highly-publicized relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson reportedly raised concerns among NFL executives looking for a head coach earlier this year.
"If it's become this big an issue in Chapel Hill, can you imagine what it would be like in New York?" Myers said about the Belichick-Hudson situation.
Belichick could ease concerns about Hudson during a phone call with Mara. Alternatively, Schoen might eventually persuade Mara and Tisch that rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart should have a young offensive expert as his next full-time head coach.
