Brewers' Pat Murphy joins exclusive club with second straight Manager of the Year award win

Pat Murphy has led the Milwaukee Brewers for two seasons. He has made a tremendous impact on the franchise in that time.

The 66-year-old Murphy was named the National League Manager of the Year on Tuesday, earning 27 out of 30 first-place votes. Reds manager Terry Francona was second, while Phillies manager Rob Thomson finished third. Later in the evening, Guardians skipper Stephen Vogt also joined that club to create a historic sweep.

Murphy became the second NL manager, and third manager overall, to win the award in consecutive seasons. Braves manager Bobby Cox (2004 and 2005) and Rays manager Kevin Cash (2020 and 2021) are the only other managers to win the award in back-to-back years; no manager has won the award in three consecutive seasons.

Pat Murphy cementing stature as one of best managers in Milwaukee Brewers history

If his tenure in Milwaukee is any indication, Murphy may have a chance at history. The only manager in Brewers history to win the award, Murphy led Milwaukee to an MLB-best 97 wins despite trading closer Devin Williams and losing shortstop Willy Adames in free agency. His 190 wins are the most of any manager in Brewers history over their first two years at the helm, 11 more than Ron Roenicke (179 over 2010 and 2011). Murphy is also the only manager in Brewers history to bring the franchise to the postseason in his first two seasons.

A longtime coach and minor league manager, Murphy had managed just 96 games at the major league level prior to becoming the Brewers manager in 2024. He was the third manager of the Padres in 2015, leading the team to a 42-54 record as an interim manager. Murphy had been kept from interviewing for the Brewers' managerial opening in 2015 by the Padres, only to be let go by San Diego at the end of the season.

The Brewers may have taken longer to bring Murphy to Milwaukee than initially hoped. He has proved to be well worth that wait.
