As expected, the No. 18 Notre Dame women cruised to an 85-58 win over Akron on Wednesday night, but it was the historic outing from star Hannah Hidalgo that stole the show.
Hidalgo put together a stat line for the ages with a career-high 44 points (16-of-25 FG), nine rebounds, four assists and 16 steals.
She was 3-of-6 from three-point range and knocked down nine of her 11 free-throw attempts in an all around historic performance.
The 44 points are the most scored by a player in a single game in program history, while the 16 steals broke her own record for the most at Notre Dame and also set the mark for the NCAA single-game steals record.

Multiple players have had 14 steals in a game since they became a recorded stat during the 1987-88 season, with Jillian Ingram the last to do so for Georgia Tech in 2008.
This layup under the basket with just over seven minutes remaining officially set the record when Hidalgo recorded her 43rd point of the night.

There was no better example of Hidalgo's efficiency on both ends of the floor than on this steal and transition layup late in the first quarter to give Notre Dame a commanding 23-8 lead.

Through three quarters, Hidalgo had program records in points (41) and steals (13) and that was before she added even more in the fourth quarter for good measure. She had over half of the team's 85 points and 30 steals and hit three of Notre Dame's four made threes in the game.
Hidalgo earned All-American honors for the Fighting Irish last season after leading them to a fourth consecutive Sweet 16 appearance. She averaged 23.8 points per game and shot 46.3% from the floor, but as impressive as that was in her sophomore campaign, her junior season has been even better so far, averaging 34.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and recording 23 total steals.
To be fair, all three of Notre Dame's win have come against Fairleigh Dickinson, Chicago State and Akron, with all three wins by at least 27 points. The Fighting Irish have taken care of business as expected, but with No. 14 Michigan, No. 8 USC and No. 13 Ole Miss on deck in three of their next four games, they will have a chance to really prove themselves early in the season.
With Hidalgo on their side, the Fighting Irish have to like their chances after Wednesday night's record-setting performance.
