The West Virginia women's basketball team scored a huge upset on Friday night by knocking off No. 15 Duke, 57-49, to improve to 4-0 on the season. As big a win as it is for the Mountaineers, the final score is only the subplot to the real story of the game.
West Virginia secured the win after not only trailing at halftime by three points, but also after having six players — including five bench players and a starter — all get ejected from the game due to an altercation at the end of the first half.
It all started when Duke's Jordan Wood blocked a potential buzzer-beating shot from Jordan Harrison, and then proceeded to taunt her after the buzzer.
That infuriated both Harrison and the West Virginia bench.
So much so that five West Virginia players stormed off the bench to join the altercation, resulting in six ejections.
Bench players Gia Cooke, Carter McCray, Madison Parrish, Jordan Thomas and Kierra Wheeler were all ejected in the altercation, along with Harrison.
Wood was also ejected for Duke.
With six Mountaineers players getting ejected, that left them with just five players to finish the remaining 20 minutes. They ended up outscoring Duke by a 37-26 margin, including 24-9 in the third quarter.
West Virginia coach Mark Kellogg said he was disappointed in the end of the half and that he believes his team should be better than that, but that he was proud of the group of five players on the floor and the way they finished the game.
There will be plenty of upsets in college basketball this season, in both the men's and women's games, but there is a good chance none of them will be as wild as one that sees a team's entire bench get ejected at halftime and still come back to win the game.
