The race to sign Juventus striker Jonathan David is hotting up ahead of the January transfer window.
Having arrived on a free transfer from LOSC Lille in the summer, Jonathan David has endured a slow start to life at Juventus. The return of just one goal and an assist from 10 Serie A games has seen him drop down the striking pecking order below Dusan Vlahovic.
Both Tottenham and Chelsea from the Premier League have reportedly shown an interest in signing the Canadian international. Other clubs, including Marseille and Bayern Munich, have also been mentioned as potential suitors. David is under contract at the Allianz Stadium until 2030, and having arrived just five months ago, Juventus are a bit hesitant to give up so quickly on a player who was a prolific goalscorer during his time at Lille.
Recent developments has fuelled speculation that David might consider quitting Juventus, particularly if he wants consistent starts. Now, according to a report from Turin newspaper TuttoSport, Juventus are still confident in the striker’s abilities but if Tottenham propose an initial loan with the option to buy, they could consider an exit.
David was heavily linked with a move to Spurs throughout 2025, before he chose to run down his contract with Lille and join Juventus as a free agent. The Lilywhites have revived their interest in the 25-year-old, with Thomas Frank looking for attacking reinforcements. This is because Richarlison has underperformed under Frank, while Dominic Solanke is recovering from an ankle surgery that has limited him to just two appearances.
With Richarlison eyeing a possible departure in January, it would make total sense for Tottenham to sign a long-term replacement for him. And David, in that regard, would represent a notable upgrade on the Brazilian international- both in terms of goalscoring and fitness record.
The Canadian has struggled to get going at a club that does not have a stable environment and only changed their manager last month. A new environment, lack of continuity and change in the managerial hotseat mid-season are among the factors that has contributed to the centre-forward’s slow start to life in Turin.
A change in scenery might help David to regain his confidence, and Tottenham could be that club. There is little doubt in the player’s ability, having seen him score over 100 goals for former club Lille. Frank’s excellent man-management skills may work like magic for the North American star and help him revive his career.
But any move mid-season is not as easy as it seems, given that Juve still have that upper hand in negotiations with his contract running until 2030. So, despite David’s stock tumbling in recent months, Spurs could be forced to propose a loan fee with a decent option-to-buy figure in January.
