One of the worst-kept secrets in college football this season has been James Franklin's expected candidacy for Virginia Tech's head-coaching job.
After Penn State fired Franklin on Oct. 12, he was linked to several SEC openings, including Arkansas and Auburn. Therefore, Franklin has had ample time to assess which program gives him the best shot to return to the College Football Playoff.
According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, the Hokies are in the "early stages" of discussions to hire Franklin. Virginia Tech is expected to decide on him early next week. Meanwhile, the Hokies are reportedly exploring other candidates.
"Former Penn State head coach James Franklin and Virginia Tech are engaged in the in the early stages of talks about him becoming the next Virginia Tech head coach," Thamel said on ESPN's "College GameDay" on Saturday morning. "Resolution on his candidacy at Virginia Tech is expected in the upcoming days."
"Look, Tech still running a full search. They're engaged with other candidates, but I canconfirm mutual interest right now, and the potential resolution early next week, and we'll see if Jake Franklin is coaching in the ACC next season."

Despite interest in other candidates, Franklin would be an outstanding choice for Virginia Tech. After guiding PSU to the College Football Playoff semifinal in January and winning the Big Ten championship with them in 2016, he has the potential to turn the Hokies into an ACC contender.
During his tenures at Vanderbilt and Penn State, Franklin's coaching record stands at 104-45. He posted an overall 24-15 record and an 11-13 record in SEC play over three seasons at Vandy, a program that had consistently been at the bottom of the SEC before his arrival.
