Former player has lost confidence in Chiefs after latest loss

The Kansas City Chiefs are running out of excuses after Sunday's 22-19 loss to the Denver Broncos.

One year removed from recording 11 one-score wins in 2024, the Chiefs are now 0-5 in such games this season and currently sit at 5-5 as the AFC's ninth seed.

The explosiveness has been relatively nonexistent on this Chiefs team, something it is not used to in the Patrick Mahomes era. That is why former NFL player and current ESPN analyst Damien Woody has run out of excuses for them.

Damien Woody makes feelings known on Chiefs

"I think this is a team where it's kind of like New England from the past where in New England, half the battle was mental going up against that team," Woody said during an appearance on Monday's edition of "Get Up." "... Last year, they (Kansas City) won a bunch of one-score games on their way to the Super Bowl and then get shellacked by the Philadelphia Eagles.

"Guess what? This year, they're 0-for-5 in one-score games. They're not able to finish these types of games. I don't think teams are scared of the Kansas City Chiefs anymore. They don't create explosive plays. They got all their guys. We've been talking about getting Rashee Rice back, Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, all these guys. They still can't create explosive plays, still can't protect Patrick Mahomes."

It was another sluggish offensive performance from the Chiefs on Sunday, failing to score a TD until running back Kareem Hunt punched it in late in the third quarter.

Mahomes was far from perfect once again, completing 29 of his 45 passes for 276 yards, one TD and one interception. Facing a 3rd-and-14 with the game tied at 6-6, Mahomes tried to make a play to the endzone, only to get picked off by Broncos cornerback Ja'Quan McMillian.

While Mahomes ultimately took the blame for the inconsistency after the game, the struggles do not solely reside with him. Kicker Harrison Butker had an extra-point attempt blocked that kept the game in a 19-19 tie and the Chiefs committed 10 penalties for 69 yards in Sunday's loss.

Many expected Kansas City to overcame its slow start and return to form once it got fully healthy on offense. Through 11 weeks, the Chiefs are in uncharted territory outside the playoff picture. They also have five losses to Denver's two and still sit behind the four-loss Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West, a division they have won nine consecutive seasons.

Kansas City still faces the Chargers and Broncos one more time, but it also plays host to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 12, the league's highest-scoring offense (32.1 PPG).

There is still plenty of football to be played, but even for the Chiefs, it is going to take a near-perfect stretch to get out of the hole they have dug themselves into.
