Missing 2023 No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama, last year's No. 4 pick Stephon Castle and 2025 No. 2 pick Dylan Harper, the San Antonio Spurs are showing they have talent all over their roster. Even if it doesn't have the same draft pedigree.
San Antonio defeated the Atlanta Hawks, 135-126, behind big performances from two undrafted players. Julian Champagnie hit five three-pointers and scored 20 points, while rookie David Jones Garcia keyed two big Spurs runs with 12 points, six assists and three steals in his first significant playing time.
Champagnie has started 98 games for the Spurs in the last three seasons, despite the Spurs continually adding more high-profile talent. He's got good size at 6-foot-8 and can defend multiple positions, while shooting 39% on threes. The Spurs have other talented defenders, but not many who can also space the floor like Champagnie and move the ball without needing shots.
Jones Garcia was a Summer League standout for San Antonio, averaging 21.3 points and making half of his three-pointers in Las Vegas. He shot 38% on threes in his final college season with Memphis, and like Champagnie, he's a solid defender with good size.
In the fourth quarter, after the Hawks got within two points, Jones Garcia grabbed a rebound and fired a long pass to, who else, Champagnie, for an easy bucket.

That sparked a 13-2 run where the Spurs had four dunks, all with De'Aaron Fox (26 points, nine assists) on the bench.

Aside from Champagnie and Jones Garcia, who were +15 and +25 on the night, respectively, the Spurs have other unheralded contributors. Keldon Johnson scored 25 points off the bench and shot 9-for-12. Harrison Barnes (16 points) is shooting 53.7% and scored his 14,000th career point Thursday.
Luke Kornet is the competent backup center the Spurs lacked last season, and Kelly Olynyk has shown he can provide solid bench minutes when Wemby is out. Jeremy Sochan had five rebounds and five assists, with a block and a steal. The Spurs are missing three point guards yet still delivered 34 assists against 10 turnovers.
The Spurs still need Wembanyama, and, to a lesser extent, Castle, to be a truly elite team. But it's very encouraging that this team can steal games even with important players injured. It's been a next-man-up situation for the Spurs this week and they're delivering — no matter where that next man was drafted, if at all.
