Keegan Bradley hints at whether he wants to be 2027 Ryder Cup captain

It would be a harsh ending if Keegan Bradley’s Ryder Cup journey finished with him in the media room at Bethpage, trying to explain how Team USA became the first home side to lose since 2012.

His connection to golf’s most famous event has been a bumpy one.

His strong start at Medinah in 2012 was lost amid Europe’s famous comeback, and two years later, Tom Watson did not hold back his thoughts on Bradley’s play at Gleneagles.

He was left off the team for Rome in 2023 – a moment that made its way into Full Swing and may have even played a part in his appointment as captain for this year’s event.

It felt more like a hard assignment than an opportunity, handed down by the PGA of America.

Bradley had done enough to be considered for the squad. He picked up a win at the Travelers Championship and was in contention late at East Lake.

Looking back, it raises questions about what might have happened if he had managed to close out that win at East Lake.

Keegan Bradley speaks on leaving himself out of the Bethpage Ryder Cup team

Bradley decided not to select himself for the 2025 Bethpage team, extending his long wait for a Ryder Cup victory.

There is talk of him getting another shot as captain in 2027. The thinking is that he might have learned enough from this experience to finally bring the trophy back from Europe, something no American captain has managed since Tom Watson in 1993.

Bradley spoke about his decision during a virtual press conference ahead of The Skins Game, which will be shown live on Amazon Prime Video on November 28th. His comments also made it pretty clear where he stands on the possibility of captaining again at Adare Manor.

He said: “Yeah, when I think back at the Ryder Cup throughout my life, it’s a strange feeling because it’s an event that I love, but there’s been such heartbreak involved with every single one of them.

“And for me, I’ve spoken to Xander and all the boys about this, I’m forever going to have that hole inside of me of not winning as a captain. And it’s always going to be in the back of my mind and is what a strange thing is.

“This was never on my radar to be Ryder Cup captain, so this is a new feeling for me. But first and foremost, I’m a player and when I decided not to play, that was for what I thought was for the betterment of the team. And when I got there that week, early in the week, I was thinking how badly I wanted to play.

“But then as the week went on, I realized how impossible that would’ve been just with the long hours and the stress and the moving around. And so for me, I have to revert back, switch back to thinking of myself as a player. I would love to play in another Ryder Cup. I’ll be 41 on the next one, so who knows? But I’ll give it certainly my hardest and I hope to be a part of many Ryder Cups to come.”

Keegan Bradley seems to be taking the same approach as Justin Rose ahead of the 2027 Ryder Cup

Bradley has not shut down any possibility completely. But with Justin Rose reportedly, according to The Telegraph, pulling out of the running for Europe’s captaincy in Ireland to focus on making the team as a player, it looks like Bradley could be leaning in that direction too.

If the decision came closer to the event, Bradley could still throw his hat into the ring.

But it seems unlikely he would want to take on that responsibility more than a year out from play beginning.

Beyond that, it is important to note that an away Ryder Cup brings even more challenges.
