Lions' Jared Goff calls Jahmyr Gibbs 'as good as they come'

The Detroit Lions got a much-needed win in overtime against the New York Giants on Sunday, 34-27, to keep their hopes of winning the NFC North alive.

One of the stars of the Lions' win over the 2-10 Giants was running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who ran for a  career-high 219 yards (15 carries) and two touchdowns while averaging 14.6 yards per carry. With two carries of 49 yards and a 69-yard run to win the game in overtime, Gibbs' career game captured the attention of his quarterback, Jared Goff, who called the third-year running back "as good as they come in this league."

"That dude is as good as they come in this league," Goff said, via Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "He's making his claim across the league as one of the best players regardless of position. We're lucky to have him. He's so electric."

Goff also added that the two-time Pro Bowl back puts "fear in the defense when the ball gets in his hands."

"You can tell the fear in the defense when the ball gets in his hands, the way they rally to him. And certainly, when he gets to the second level on some of those longer runs, you can feel the safety, the angle they start taking, and it's a good feeling for us," Goff added, via Justin Rogers of Detroit Football Network.

Jahmyr Gibbs has shown he's one of the best running backs in the NFL

Gibbs has proved to be one of the best running backs in the league this season, ranking third (951 yards) behind the Buffalo Bills' James Cook (1,084 yards) and the Indianapolis Colts' Jonathan Taylor (1,197 yards) in rushing. In his last three games, Gibbs has run for 582 yards and scored six touchdowns.

Facing the fourth-best defense (278.7 yards per game) and the sixth-best defense against the run (96.5 yards per game) in the Green Bay Packers (7-3-1) on Thanksgiving, Gibbs will still likely be a factor in the Lions' game plan.

In his past two games on Thanksgiving, Gibbs was a non-factor — rushing for 54 yards on 11 carries and no touchdowns in 2023 against the Packers, while being slightly better last year against the Chicago Bears, rushing for 87 yards and no touchdowns on nine carries.
