No. 2 Texas women continue to shine defensively in win over No. 11 North Carolina

It is becoming clear that the second-ranked Texas women have a stout defense after picking up a fourth win already over a ranked opponent.

The Longhorns took down No. 11 North Carolina, 79-64, to improve to 9-0, adding to other ranked wins over then-No. 24 Richmond, No. 3 UCLA and No. 2 South Carolina.

A prevailing theme has been the defensive tenacity of the Longhorns, having forced an average of 24 turnovers per game, which ranked 15th in the country entering Thursday.

Texas is building a strong early-season resume

Not only has Texas excelled forcing turnovers, but it has prevented opposing teams from knocking down triples. Look no further than Thursday night's win over North Carolina when the Tar Heels were held to just 2-of-11 (18%).

Texas recently impressed by winning the Players Era Championship with senior guard Rori Harmon leading the way. She had a team-high 26 points in the win over No. 3 UCLA and hit the game-winner against No. 2 South Carolina.

However, the Longhorns' depth was on full display this time around as Harmon only had six points on 3-of-8 shooting. Instead, it was the hot shooting from sophomore guard Jordan Lee, who led the team with a career-high 22 points (10-of-16 FG), including this mid-range jumper to extend Texas' lead to eight less than one minute into the third quarter.

Altogether, four of the seven players to appear in the game for Texas scored in double figures, including sophomore forward Justice Carlton (11 points) and senior center Kyla Oldacre (16 points), who both came off the bench.

The margin of victory may have been 15, but Texas led by as many as 24 in its latest signature win. From the forced turnovers and three-point defense to the balanced scoring with five players averaging double-figures this season, the Longhorns are proving to be a matchup nightmare.

One final nonconference test against No. 14 Baylor awaits on Dec. 14 before SEC play gets underway on New Year's Day. If Texas continues to have its way defensively, it could be a tall task to slow the Longhorns down if the first month of the season is any indication.
