Former Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilón is finally on the verge of returning to professional football, with reports in Spain claiming he is set to sign for Inter Miami. According to Spanish outlet Marca, it’s “considered a done deal” and could be announced shortly after the MLS Cup final this weekend.
The move comes six months after Reguilón left Tottenham on a free transfer, ending a difficult spell in north London that saw him sent out on several loans before his contract expired in the summer.
Inter Miami are preparing to bid farewell to veteran defender Jordi Alba, who is expected to leave the club after the MLS Cup final. The MLS side have identified Reguilón as their Plan A replacement, with the Spaniard already spotted in Miami in recent days.
His arrival would reunite him with a star-studded Miami squad featuring Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets an appealing environment for a player eager to reboot his career.
From a Tottenham perspective, Reguilón’s move caps a dramatic year. He played his final game for Spurs in May against Aston Villa, but the club opted against extending his stay. Since then, the 28-year-old has undergone the toughest stretch of his career.
With no club and no competitive minutes, Reguilón has been “training alone exhaustively” to maintain fitness, according to the report. His professionalism and determination have been praised, even though the lack of match action raises questions about how quickly he can adapt to MLS tempo.
For Tottenham, it marks another player from the Jose Mourinho era moving on permanently, part of the continued squad reset under new boss Thomas Frank.
The big challenge ahead is match sharpness. Six months without football is significant, and Inter Miami will need Reguilón to hit the ground running as they build for the 2026 MLS season.
Still, with Alba departing and Miami needing an attacking full-back, Reguilón’s profile fits perfectly. If he can regain rhythm, this could be the revival his career needs.
