The Kansas City Chiefs don't control their own destiny right now. Andy Reid's team needs plenty of help to make the playoffs, especially after the Los Angeles Chargers' win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night.
At 6-7, it looks like the Kansas City dynasty's best days are far behind. And while there have been multiple issues with this team, the wide receivers corps deserves its own mention. As shared by ESPN's Nate Taylor, the pass-catchers have let Patrick Mahomes down all year long.
"Here's a stat that is reminiscent of the 2023 season. This year, the Chiefs are tied for 2nd in the league in dropped passes (24), according to ESPN Research," Taylor wrote on X.
Mahomes just had the worst game of his career, at least by the numbers, but the tape doesn't match that. Two of his three interceptions came from drops. Also, while Andy Reid's controversial decision to go for it on fourth down deep in his own territory didn't make much sense, Rashee Rice dropped a pass that would've given his team a first down.
Most of Mahomes' 10 interceptions have bounced off his receivers' hands. He's had to battle his banged-up and undisciplined offensive line, opposing defenses and his own pass-catchers to throw for 3,398 passing yards, all while being second on the team in total rushing yards.
Even Travis Kelce has failed to be the same reliable playmaker he was in his prime. If (or when) the Chiefs fail to make the playoffs, GM Brett Veach will have to seriously consider blowing up the pass-catchers corps in the offseason.
