A disappointing season for the Boston Red Sox was a wake-up call for the organization.
They've been one of the most active teams in the early stages of the Winter Meetings, and they're looking to give Alex Cora more to work with next season.
Naturally, that also means holding onto Alex Bregman. The star slugger slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 homers. Of course, they won't be alone in their pursuit. According to multiple reports, the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs will resume their efforts to sign him.
The Tigers reportedly made the highest bid for him last season, and while they're not willing to go to the same lengths this time around, they will still touch base with him:
Per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free-Press, the Tigers will reignite their pursuit of Bregman, who they tried to sign to a $170 million deal last offseason. This time, however, their interest has been "fairly muted" in comparison to last year.
The Cubs, on the other hand, have reportedly already reached out to the two-time World Series champion, according to FanSided's Robert Murray.
"The Chicago Cubs had a Zoom meeting with free-agent infielder Alex Bregman a few weeks ago, sources familiar with the situation say," Murray wrote.
The Red Sox need Bregman to stay put at third base to keep Marcelo Mayer at second base, and with not many high-end bats and clubhouse leaders available, they will make keeping him around their No. 1 priority.
