The Dallas Cowboys have gone 3-1 since the trade deadline, and with the Philadelphia Eagles' late-season skid, they still have a chance to make the playoffs.
With that in mind, they need to make sure that everybody's at their best when they take the field. That's why Trevon Diggs is a long shot to suit up against the Minnesota Vikings. Judging by head coach Brian Schottenheimer, it might be a while before he's back out there. In fact, he may have already played his last snap with the organization.
"In terms of Trevon, he’s still in the ramp period," Schottenheimer said, per The Dallas Morning News. "I think he does feel healthy, I know he wants to play, but at the end of the day, we have to do what we think is the best interest of not just him, but also the football team, and when you miss some time, there’s the ramp-up period. It is not just for your body, but for your mind and figuring out some of the defense, and there’s some new faces in the huddle and things like that. So again, love him as a player, but ultimately he’s got to show us he’s ready to do everything the right way."
Diggs has missed the past seven games. He suffered a mysterious concussion and knee injury at home. That was just days after he criticized defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus' schemes, so it raised some questions about the timing. However, the Cowboys secondary has actually benefited from his absence.
Per Pro Football Reference, he gave up 68.8 percent of his targets, and he's giving up career-worsts in yards per target (11.9), yards per completion (17.4) and passer rating when targeted (148.7). Despite the limited playing time, he already gave up 191 yards and three scores.
Diggs is still signed through the 2028 season, and given his history of injuries, subpar play and his comments about the coaching staff, he might be on his way out. The Cowboys would save roughly $54 million in cap space over the next three years by releasing him in the offseason. With rookie Shavon Revel Jr. looking good, there aren't many incentives to bring him back.
