The Dallas Cowboys faced a tall task already to make the playoffs, but after another disappointing performance from the defense and a three-TD game from J.J. McCarthy, the Minnesota Vikings pulled the road upset in a 34-26 win on "Sunday Night Football."
Here are four takeaways from Sunday's NFL nightcap:
Before the Week 14 loss to the Detroit Lions, the Cowboys appeared to be improving defensively amid their three-game winning streak. The issues are not going away anytime soon after giving up 34 points to a Vikings team that had already been eliminated from postseason contention.
Even though the Cowboys have played well enough offensively on most weekends to have more wins than they currently do, they have received no help from the defense. As a result, NFL.com's playoff predictor only gives them a less than 1% chance of making the postseason.
Dallas (6-7-1) is currently on pace to join the 2000 Los Angeles Rams as the only two teams in league history to score and allow 29 points per game. If it was not clear before, that is not sustainable for this Cowboys team and a major reason their playoff hopes are all but dashed after another loss.
Even though the Vikings (6-8) were eliminated from playoff contention prior to kickoff, you could not tell by their performance on the field. That included McCarthy, who was 15-of-24 for 250 yards with three TDs (one rushing) and one interception.
Both of McCarthy's passing TDs went to wide receiver Jalen Nailor, one on a 20-yard strike in the first quarter, and the other on a four-yard connection that extended Minnesota's lead to eight with 9:12 remaining.

McCarthy now has three TDs in each of his last two games and only one interception on the second play of the game against the Cowboys. Sure, his mechanics still need some work, as his off-balanced TD throw to Nailor showed, but he has certainly looked better lately for a team that can take any momentum he can give it to end a disappointing 2025 season.
Even with offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw (knee) inactive for the game, Minnesota did not give up a sack all night for only the second time with McCarthy as the starting QB all season.
According to Next Gen Stats, McCarthy completed 10 of his 14 passes for 187 yards and a TD on dropbacks longer than 2.5 seconds, producing a positive EPA (Expected Points Added) for the first time in his career.

McCarthy's +17.3 EPA on those dropbacks were the 8th-most by any QB in a game this season.

McCarthy had an unforgettable first half in his debut against the Chicago Bears earlier this season, but a lot of that was due to a lack of protection from his offensive line. Tied for the fifth-most sacks allowed (47) entering Week 15, the Vikings gave their young QB time to operate and it paid dividends.
Even though Aubrey made four field-goal attempts on Sunday night (37, 26, 41, 41), he also missed from 51 and 59 yards, respectively. Instead, Aubrey ran a fake field goal to perfection on a 4th-and-4 following a three-and-out from the offense, which eventually led to the game's first TD moments later.

It was a rare off night from Aubrey kicking, but he still found a way to make an impact and keep the opening drive of the game alive, even if the rest of the night did not go according to plan.
