Browns HC Kevin Stefanski tries to explain bizarre wristband blunder

Kevin Stefanski is squarely on the hot seat as the Cleveland Browns limp across the finish line of the 2025 season, and an embarrassing sequence that unfolded on Sunday probably will not help the head coach's cause.

The Browns fell to 3-11 with a 31-3 loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 15. Rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Cleveland's offense looked completely out of sorts throughout the entire game, and Fox sideline reporter Allison Williams offered an explanation for at least some of the issues.

After a Browns drive stalled out early in the second quarter, Williams reported that Sanders had to have "a change" and "some tweaks" made to the offensive play sheet that was in his wristband.

That led to speculation that Sanders was given a wristband with the wrong plays written on it.

Kevin Stefanski did not offer much explanation

During his postgame news conference, Stefanski was asked what happened with Sanders' wristband early in the game. The coach said there was a "miscommunication" and suggested something happened with the wristband itself, rather than Sanders being given the wrong plays.

"There was a miscommunication early," Stefanski said. "There was something...I don't know, the wristband got something on it or whatever it was. But we got that fixed quickly."

Stefanski said the wristband "got something on it," which made it seem like Sanders simply could not read the plays. Sanders was also asked what happened, and he said the card fell out of the wristband.

"Oh no, the card just fell out. It just fell out on the sideline. Yeah, that was it," Sanders said.

Shedeur Sanders had a rough day

Sanders has been named the Browns' starting QB for the remainder of the season. Some wondered if that would give him a boost of confidence, but he certainly did not look sharp on Sunday.

Sanders completed 18-of-35 passes for 177 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in the loss to Chicago. The Browns punted on their first six offensive possessions before finally getting on the board with a field goal in the third quarter. They failed to score another point after that.

Stefanski was quick to defend Sanders after Sunday's game, but there has been a lot of talk about the two not being on the same page since Cleveland drafted the former Colorado star. That may ultimately contribute to Stefanski losing his job, especially if the Browns' front office is committed to Sanders.
