Florida quarterback DJ Lagway to enter transfer portal

One of the largest dominoes of the college football transfer portal has officially fallen.

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway will be entering the transfer portal. Lagway went to Florida as a five-star recruit and one of the most hyped quarterbacks in the program since Tim Tebow.

Florida career full of ups and downs

Lagway took over as quarterback for the Gators midway through the 2024 season, replacing an injured Graham Mertz. He would lead Florida to wins in five of its final six games of the season, building momentum toward a full season as the starter in 2025.

Lagway failed to deliver on the promise of his 2024 debut in 2025, however. He did throw 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Those brought his career numbers to 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions, not sustainable for an SEC quarterback.

He had three starts in 2025 with multiple interceptions, including three against Kentucky and five against LSU.

What are the potential landing spots?

Coming out of high school, Lagway had offers from some of the biggest programs in the country, including Clemson, USC, Oregon, Oklahoma, Penn State and plenty more.

It'll be interesting to see if any of those programs re-visit Lagway after his subpar performance in Gainesville over the last two seasons or if he will find a place closer to his home state of Texas to spend at least the 2026 season.
