The 3-11 Arizona Cardinals will limp through the final few weeks of yet another lost campaign for a franchise that could embrace a reset this coming offseason.
Part of that reset may involve Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill firing head coach Jonathan Gannon. On Monday, Gannon was asked what his "pitch" would be to hold onto his job.
"I believe in myself, and I believe in our team," Gannon responded, per Darren Urban of the Cardinals' website. "We are at a dip right now. We're going through some adversity, but I do believe in us, and we will get out of the dip."
That "dip" could be blamed on the fact that starting quarterback Kyler Murray made just five starts this season before he was shut down due to a lingering foot injury. Reports throughout the fall have indicated that Gannon and Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort will be given an opportunity to stay put and pick a new QB1 during the offseason.
Neither Gannon nor Ossenfort was with the Cardinals when they drafted Murray in 2019 and when the club signed Murray to a five-year contract extension in the summer of 2022. That said, Gannon holds a woeful 15-33 overall record as Arizona's head coach. The Cardinals are coming off blowout losses to the Los Angeles Rams and the Houston Texans.
"I do have to have a little bit of foresight as I am taking notes as the year has gone," Gannon added. "What do I have to look at with a critical eye and change? Because if we keep doing the same thing and getting the same result, that's not good for anybody in my seat."
The Cardinals next host the Atlanta Falcons (5-9) this coming Sunday. One wonders if Arizona suffering a blowout loss to the lowly Falcons at State Farm Stadium would result in Bidwill making a change before Week 18.
As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Cardinals as 2.5-point home underdogs against the Falcons.
