Star shortstop Bo Bichette was expected to draw plenty of interest in free agency. Fast forward to today, and the market has been rather slow.
There have been rumors about the Red Sox, Dodgers, Giants, Mariners and Rangers, but nothing concrete. That's why it now seems like Bichette is willing to change positions if that's going to help his case. According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, one source with knowledge of the negotiations revealed that Bichette is eager to move to second base.
"It seems like the message has gotten through to him that teams don’t view him as a shortstop in the long-term – or maybe even in 2026," one source told Feinsand. "His willingness to change positions can only help him in the market."
While a solid hitter, Bichette's defensive shortcomings at shortstop have always been an issue. He has -28 outs above average in the past five seasons.
He looked good at second base in the World Series with Toronto. And even though seven games isn't a big enough sample size, it might be enough to convince teams to make a run at him. This might even help his most recent team, as the Blue Jays could then keep him at second base and move Andres Gimenez to shortstop.
Bichette is expected to land a five-year contract worth something around $130 million to $150 million, and his willingness to change positions should only help speed things up in the market.
