History seemed to be repeating itself when the Seattle Seahawks trailed the Los Angeles Rams by 16 points in the fourth quarter of Thursday night's game after Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold tossed two costly interceptions.
However, Darnold bounced back and ultimately helped the Seahawks earn a thrilling 38-37 overtime win that improved Seattle to 12-3 and gave the club sole possession of the NFC's No. 1 playoff seed. After the game, the sometimes-mocked signal-caller seemed hesitant to take a significant victory lap while speaking with reporters.
"I didn't think we played our best football," Darnold directly said, per Grant Gordon of the NFL's website. "I certainly didn't play my best football. We've got a lot of work to do there, but at the end of the day we won. That team in that locker room, all the guys in that locker room, we work so hard for moments like this. Obviously, we've got a lot of work to do, and we're going to continue to push and get better, but those guys in the locker room deserve a win like that against a really, really good team."
One wonders if Darnold was still seeing some "ghosts" of his past when he offered those comments. It was back in January of this year when he endured a nightmare outing while serving as the Minnesota Vikings' QB1 in a wild-card loss to the Rams. Last month, he threw four interceptions during Seattle's 21-19 defeat against Los Angeles.
Darnold may have also felt a bit lucky following Thursday's result. After all, he had nothing to do with the Rashid Shaheed 58-yard punt return for a score that cut the Rams' lead from 16 points to eight with roughly eight minutes left in regulation. The Seahawks also benefited from one of the most unique game-tying two-point conversions the football community has seen in some time:

That said, Darnold deserves credit for his fourth-quarter and overtime touchdown passes, the second of which he followed with a game-winning throw to relatively unknown tight end Eric Saubert.
Earlier in the week, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald shared that he wanted Darnold to be "shocking" versus the Rams in terms of "the execution" and "the beauty of the details." That process involved Darnold not getting down on himself after his two second-half picks.
"I think for us, for me especially, I've had games like this in the past where I haven't played necessarily my best football and turned the ball over," Darnold added. "But at the end of the game you see yourself on the other side. It's not great when you have interceptions and turnovers. You want to limit that, but all you can do is fight back. And for us, I was just gonna continue to plug away and get the ball to open receivers and go through my reads."
The first-place Seahawks now control their postseason destiny, as they lead the 11-4 Rams and the 10-4 San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West standings. Seattle next plays at the Carolina Panthers (7-7) on Dec. 28.
