New York Jets star wide receiver Garrett Wilson hasn't appeared in a game since Week 10 of the season due to a lingering knee issue.
As had been expected, Wilson won't play in a meaningful contest again before September 2026 arrives.
As Myles Simmons shared for Pro Football Talk, first-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed while speaking with reporters on Friday that Wilson will remain on injured reserve through the end of the season.
"Garrett’s doing a really good job in his rehab, but what we’re going to do — just talking to docs, talking to him — is we’re going to hold him out for the rest of the season, and he will be ready to go as the offseason program starts up," Glenn explained. "And I’m excited about that."
Since the Jets made Wilson a first-round pick during the 2022 NFL Draft, he has repeatedly shown that he can be a top-tier receiver even when having to deal with below-average quarterback play. This past offseason, Wilson signed a four-year, $130M contract extension. While the Jets acquired assets for cornerback Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams ahead of the November trade deadline, there's no indication that general manager Darren Mougey will make Wilson available to other clubs this coming offseason.
That said, the decision to shut Wilson down could be yet another sign that Glenn doesn't need to earn any more wins to hold onto his job. The 3-11 Jets next play at the 4-10 New Orleans Saints this coming Sunday. As of Friday afternoon, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Jets as six-point underdogs for that game.
"He’s on board," Glenn said about Wilson's reaction to the decision. "And, again, he’s doing really, really well as far as his rehab. We just want to be smart with him because he’s a key cog of what we’re doing here. And to be able to get him back in the offseason program fully healthy, ready to go, we felt like that was the best decision for all of us."
