New report sheds light on Joe Burrow's feelings toward Bengals

Joe Burrow made some surprising comments recently that have fans worried he could take the same career path as Andrew Luck, but it sounds like the star quarterback may have merely been sending a message to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Following a tough 39-34 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 14, Burrow seemed to create some doubt over whether he is committed to continuing his NFL career beyond the 2025 season. Burrow suggested that he has not been having fun playing and admitted he has questioned his future.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Burrow is trying to exert pressure on the Bengals.

"It was a week of soul-searching once again for Joe Burrow, this time kind of saying, 'Yeah, I wonder what it would be like in another uniform,'" Rapoport said Sunday. "My understanding of Burrow's statements is, first of all, right now they have to basically -- in his mind -- play perfect to win and that has not happened. This is him putting a little pressure on the front office and ownership to be aggressive this offseason."

Joe Burrow has had a disappointing year

Burrow missed nine games this season after undergoing surgery on his foot. There was some hope that he might return and help lead the Bengals to the playoffs, but the team fell to 4-10 with back-to-back losses to the Bills and Baltimore Ravens. Burrow threw four interceptions across the two games.

Burrow is only in his sixth NFL season, but he has already been named NFL Comeback Player of the Year twice. That shows not only that he is capable of overcoming adversity, but also that he has suffered numerous significant injuries early on in his career.

It is hardly a surprise that Burrow is not enjoying himself all that much in 2025. The Bengals entered the season with playoff aspirations, but Burrow's injury set them back. Though some have wondered whether Burrow could request a trade, he insists his recent comments had nothing to do with being unhappy in Cincinnati.

Teams could attempt to trade for Joe Burrow

The Bengals have not given any indication that they are willing to trade Burrow, but that may not stop rival teams from calling.

The Miami Dolphins reportedly wanted Burrow so badly in 2020 that they offered Cincinnati four first-round picks to trade up to the No. 1 spot in the draft. Those same Dolphins happen to have benched their starting QB with three games remaining in the season and are reportedly planning to move on from him.

The Dolphins and other QB-needy teams will likely reach out to the Bengals in the coming weeks and months, though that does not mean Cincinnati will want to part with its franchise cornerstone.
