Baker Mayfield's most consequential throw of the season was his worst.
With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers trailing the Carolina Panthers, 23-20, with under a minute to go in Sunday's game — one that could very well determine the winner of the NFC South — Mayfield had navigated his squad into Carolina territory.
Tampa Bay faced a 2nd-and-9 from the Carolina 42-yard-line, and Mayfield attempted to throw a pass to the numbers on the far side of the field.
The problem? Mike Evans was standing by the hashmarks with his hands raised, wondering where his quarterback was trying to throw the football.
Mayfield's errant pass was intercepted by Lathan Ransom, sealing the game for the Panthers. Carolina now has control of the NFC South entering Week 17. Carolina (8-7) and Tampa Bay (7-8) will meet again in Week 18.

Tampa Bay must win its final two games against the Dolphins and Panthers to win the NFC South and make the playoffs, while Carolina could clinch the division by beating the Bucs again in Week 18.
The loss is the sixth in seven games for the Buccaneers, who have imploded as the race for the division has tightened. For Carolina, Sunday's win is their first against the Bucs in the last six games.
Mayfield's play has noticeably worsened over the course of Tampa Bay's skid. In the Buccaneers' last six losses, Mayfield has thrown nine touchdowns to six interceptions — but Sunday's game-losing pick was by far the most impactful.
