Bills' Josh Allen, Sean McDermott open up about failed two-point conversion in loss to Eagles

With five seconds remaining in regulation of Sunday's matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles, Bills quarterback Josh Allen had an opportunity to connect with wide-open wide receiver Khalil Shakir for what likely would have been a game-winning pass on a two-point conversion play.

However, Allen's throw sailed beyond Shakir's grasp and fell harmlessly to the ground. The Bills ultimately suffered a 13-12 loss that dropped them to 11-5 and ensured that the New England Patriots (13-3) will enter the playoffs as champions of the AFC East. Following Sunday's game, those involved with that two-point play discussed the decision and also what went wrong for the hosts.

Why Sean McDermott played for the win instead of for overtime vs. Eagles

"Wanted to be aggressive, going for the win," Bills head coach Sean McDermott said about not kicking a standard extra point, per Andy Nesbitt of Sports Illustrated. "It felt like we had a great call, great opportunity to go win it. Wanted to be aggressive, so I’m not gonna sit back. I trust Josh Allen with the ball in his hands and I would do it over again. ... I’d take him 1,000 times out of 1,000 times to make that play."

Sports Illustrated's Eva Geitheim noted that Buffalo's Michael Badgley had his first extra-point attempt of the game blocked. Additionally, Badgley had missed five extra points on the season before McDermott put the ball in Allen's hands.

That said, the Buffalo defense shut the Philadelphia offense out over the contest's final two quarters. According to Bob Brookover of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, the Eagles accumulated just 16 yards on offense in the game's second half. Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts failed to complete a pass in the last two quarters of play.

Josh Allen accepts blame for two-point failure

"Yeah, I just missed," Allen said about his incomplete pass on the game's defining play, per Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN. "Rolling left, got to get him a better ball."

The Bills will now find themselves on the road for the upcoming playoff games. Shakir and Co. may spend a portion of this week wondering what could have been had Allen made a better throw on the two-point try.

"Obviously, a play that we've been working on. It was there," Shakir said about the play. "I mean, me personally, I feel like maybe I could have came out, break a little faster and help 17 out and just make myself a little more available."

The Bills will close their regular season with a home game against the New York Jets (3-13) on Jan. 4.
