Eagles had Josh Allen game plan ahead of win over Bills

The Philadelphia Eagles could still claim the NFC's No. 2 seed for the playoffs following their nervy 13-12 win over the Buffalo Bills that improved Philadelphia to 11-5 on Sunday.

After the victory, Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis opened up about how he and his teammates held a Buffalo offense led by reigning Most Valuable Player and starting quarterback Josh Allen to just 12 points.

Eagles didn't want to be beaten by Josh Allen

"We wanted to stop their run up front," Davis told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. "We knew they led the league in rushing yards as a team, as a unit, and we wanted to make sure that we handled that. And then let Josh Allen play QB from the pocket. And he got out of the pocket a couple times and made great passes. I mean, he’s a QB. He’s MVP. That’s what he does. But we just wanted to make sure that we went in with a plan and not let him take over the game and put the team on his back."

Allen, who is dealing with a foot injury, rushed for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter against the Eagles, the second of which occurred with five seconds remaining in regulation. That said, he accumulated just 27 rushing yards on seven total carries. He also lost one of two fumbles.

Eagles stayed "disciplined" on key two-point play

Following Allen's second rushing score of the matchup, Bills head coach Sean McDermott kept his offense on the field for a two-point conversion instead of kicking a standard extra point and playing for overtime. The Philadelphia defense then caused Allen to backpedal and roll to his left before he missed a wide-open Khalil Shakir in the end zone:

"You really have to stay disciplined with this team and with that quarterback," Davis said about that credited defensive stop. "You don’t want to be undisciplined and take a high rush or work your way outside where he can take it up the middle. And, yeah, as you can see, the results showed."

The Eagles offense once again left much to be desired with its play as it failed to score in the second half against Buffalo. However, Bob Brookover of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com mentioned that Philadelphia has allowed 14.5 points per game and tallied 26 sacks over the club's past eight contests. In total, the Eagles sacked Allen five times on Sunday.

Such data suggests the Eagles could repeat as Super Bowl champions if they can get even average play from their offense during the upcoming postseason tournament. For now, Philadelphia will concentrate on preparing for its Week 18 home game versus the Washington Commanders (4-12) on Jan. 4.

The Eagles will earn the NFC's No. 2 playoff seed if they beat Washington and the 11-5 Chicago Bears fail to defeat the Detroit Lions (8-8) this coming Sunday afternoon.
