The 13-3 Denver Broncos will claim home-field advantage for the AFC portion of the playoffs if they earn a home victory over the Los Angeles Chargers (11-5) this coming Sunday.
While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Broncos head coach Sean Payton shared that he wants fans to make their voices heard as soon as an opposing team enters its huddle during an upcoming postseason matchup held in Denver.
"I say this — I’m not being critical — but earlier. Earlier," Payton said about when an opponent should hear members of the Broncos faithful during an offensive series, per Parker Gabriel of The Denver Post. "So, no shell games on the scoreboard. No 'follow the Bronco head' or any of that. When they’re getting in the huddle — deafening. That’s the 12th man. There can be no better one. (Texas) A&M coined that phrase, and then the Seahawks bought it from them. It really fits. That is what’s so exciting about this game and then what a win in this game can do for the next couple of games."
As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Broncos as 12.5-point home favorites over the Chargers. That line likely has to do with the fact that Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh plans to rest quarterback Justin Herbert and other starters. Nevertheless, Payton insisted that the Week 18 clash "is a playoff game" for Denver.
"...There are about four stadiums in this league that can be deafening," Payton added. "...(The fans are) an active part if they want two more home games. So no quizzes. No 'did you know.' None of that. That’s stuff you do at the basketball games."
As Matt Clapp noted for Awful Announcing, Payton was asked on Wednesday if he had "an extra message" for his players related to New Year’s Eve festivities.
"I didn’t know it was New Year’s Eve," Payton acknowledged. "The most overrated holiday, honestly. Like, seriously, I didn’t know it was New Year’s Eve."
Payton understandably has other things on his mind. As of Thursday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Broncos third among the betting favorites at +700 odds to win Super Bowl LX.
