The New York Mets' offseason has been defined by the players who left the organization rather than any additions. That may be about to change.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that the Mets have "checked in" on free agent outfielder Kyle Tucker. The Mets have been linked to Tucker throughout the offseason as they look to fortify their lineup.
Tucker would be a significant upgrade. A four-time All-Star, he produced a .266/.377/.464 batting line over 597 plate appearances with the Cubs in 2025, hitting 22 homers and 25 doubles while stealing 25 bases.
Tucker would give the Mets a formidable trio in the lineup with shortstop Francisco Lindor and outfielder Juan Soto, but could provide more value than what he can do offensively. As was the case with Soto, Tucker began his career in left before shifting to right. However, unlike Soto, Tucker has been a solid defensive outfielder, winning the AL Gold Glove in right in 2022 as he led the league with 15 runs saved.
While Tucker would theoretically move to left, deferring to Soto as the right fielder, that may not be the best option if he does land with the Mets. Tucker is not a Gold Glove caliber outfielder at this point, but he was slightly below average in 2025. Soto, meanwhile, graded out as the worst defensive right fielder in baseball in 2025 with a horrendous -16.8 defensive value. Soto is likely to become a designated hitter, albeit an expensive one, sooner rather than later; signing Tucker could speed that process along.
The Mets have made improving their defense a priority this offseason. Acquiring second baseman Marcus Semien was a step in that direction. If the Mets are serious about improving their defense, finding a way to mitigate Soto's limitations should be a priority, as is improving the lineup. Signing Kyle Tucker could take care of both problems at once.
