Against all odds, Mike McDaniel survived the entire season with the Miami Dolphins. His future with the team, however, is still up in the air.
The Dolphins parted ways with GM Chris Grier earlier in the season, and they managed to turn the season around by winning five of seven games after falling to 2-7.
Still, for the fourth time in as many years, they won't win a playoff game with McDaniel at the helm, and it's the second year in a row they won't even make the playoffs.
That being said, Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer believes that McDaniel still has some supporters in the building, and keeping him around might even shape the team's GM search.
"Then, there’s Mike McDaniel’s fate, and only [Dolphins owner Stephen Ross] knows for sure what that is. Ross likes McDaniel, and my sense is he’d like to keep him, but will take in information from his top lieutenants on the decision, which is a coin flip right now. If McDaniel does stick, a GM with a standing relationship with McDaniel, like 49ers exec Josh Williams, could have an edge in that search," Breer wrote.
McDaniel has a 35-32 record in four seasons with the team. He's shown signs of promise as an offensive guru and managed to keep control of the locker room amid this turmoil.
It sounds highly unlikely that the Dolphins will roll with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa next season, but for now, his coach might be back on the sidelines with the team.
